"Color of Choice" Overlay Trick

Monday, 11 August 2008 04:41 by skhan

Have you ever wanted to change the color of an image to some color of your choice ? if yes, sit back and read on as I'm going to share one cool & easy way to do that. So, lets get started and fire up your photoshop.

I'm going to convert the orange color of RSS feed icon into butter yellow.

  • Load the image you want to change the color of.

  • Duplicate the original color layer and rename it to the color you are changing to.

  • Select the new layer (mine is RSS-Yellow) and click on the "layer style" icon and select the "Color Overlay".

  • Select the desired color.

  • You'll see your image is "overlayed" with the chosen color.

  • Now we have to change the way this new color gets spreaded, for that we'll create a new layer in between the previous layers.

  • Now select the layer called "Rss-Yellow" and merge it down by using a hot key Ctrl + E or by using a menu option: Layer-> Merge Down.  Change the name of the new layer back to "Rss-Yellow" as after merging the layers down, normally it takes up the name of the bottom layer

  • Now select the "Rss-Yellow" layer and click the "layer style" icon and select the Blending Options

  • Select the Blend Mode to "Color". It will automatically select the foreground color you've already selected so set the foreground color to the desired one before selecting the blending mode.

  • Voila! we have the Yellow RSS icon !

All the pink feed icons you see on my blog are converted to the "Color of Choice" by using this trick. You can use this trick for any other image you like.

Let me know if this helped you and I see you in the next post with some cool tools which I'm dying to share with you all !
